Mission statement

Concordia Students’ Nightline provides an anonymous, confidential, and non-judgmental active listening service. Our mission is to offer Concordia students a space to unburden their minds through the support of trained, understanding volunteers.

Our service is open to anyone seeking a supportive listener, whether they wish to talk about their day, seek information, or need support in times of crisis. We serve Concordia University students and the broader Montreal community.

Our volunteers, who are Concordia students themselves, have completed extensive training to offer empathetic and effective support. They are prepared to take calls on a range of topics, including gender and sexuality, substance use, mental health, and suicide.

We are committed to creating a welcoming environment where each student feels valued and heard.

Vision statement

Our vision is to cultivate a thriving community where Concordia University students and the broader Montreal area feel supported through empathetic listening. Our commitment is to provide a space where every voice is heard, valued, and respected, empowering callers to share their experiences without fear of judgment.

We believe that volunteering plays a crucial role in achieving this vision, as it allows students to gain valuable skills in active listening while making a meaningful impact on their peers.

History

Concordia Students’ Nightline was established in September 2018 by a group of committed Concordia University students who recognized the need for a peer-to-peer support service. These visionary students understood the importance of creating a space where their peers could anonymously find a listening ear without fear of judgment. Initially started as a grassroots initiative, Nightline quickly grew and became an essential resource for students.

As the demand for our services increased, we expanded our training program to ensure that our volunteers are well-equipped to handle a wide range of topics. Our comprehensive training covers issues such as gender and sexuality, substance use, mental health, and suicide, enabling our volunteers to offer empathetic and effective support. This commitment to thorough preparation has helped Nightline build a reputation for being a trusted resource for the student body.
