Frequently Asked Questions

Why do people use this service?

People call Concordia Students’ Nightline for many different reasons; whether you want to share something that you prefer to keep private from your close ones; you just want to talk to a non-involved third party; or you want to have a listening ear that will give you the full space to talk through what’s on your mind—we’re here to listen.

What is active listening?

Active listening means that we are here to be engaged with what you have to say, while leaving you the space to talk about and process whatever is on your mind! We let you direct the conversation, while doing our best to answer your general questions, provide resources or find information for you about topics you might not feel comfortable researching yourself.

Do I have to be a Concordia student to call?

You don’t have to be a Concordia student to call, or even an alumni! Anyone can make use of our service!* Just give us a call during our opening hours and we’ll be there to listen!

*At this time, Concordia Students’ Nightline can only guarantee service in English.

What can I call to talk about?

You can call to talk about anything you’d like!* Late night pizza recommendations, questions about sex or drugs, sharing an unpopular opinion, getting something off your mind. We’re here to listen to whatever you’d like to share!

*Concordia Students’ Nightline does not stand for any kind of abuse or verbal violence towards our volunteers.

Who’s on the other end of the line?

Our volunteers are Concordia students who have completed extensive training to be able to support you non-judgmentally, whether you just want to chat or are in a crisis. If you haven’t already, check out our Confidentiality Statement.

I need assistance now, what do I do?

Concordia Students’ Nightline is opened Wednesday to Saturday, from 6:00PM to 3:00AM. If you need immediate support outside of our opening hours, consult our Resources.

Can I become a volunteer?

Yes! We accept volunteers twice a year, once in the Fall semester and again for the Winter semester! The only requirement is that you are a current Concordia University student with a valid student ID, and eagerness to learn a new and helpful skill. Learn more about becoming a volunteer!
